An Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Is In The Works

Movies News

A follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow, the surprisingly effective Warner Bros. sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise, is officially happening.

The original film, which grossed around $100 million domestically and more than $270 million internationally, was a surprise hit—at the very least a moderate success if not an immediate one. However, Edge of Tomorrow also had a pretty definitive end to its time-repeating premise, which would make putting a sequel together a bit more of a creative challenge.

The film followed an attack on Earth by a seemingly invincible race of aliens. When one inexperienced officer, Cruise’s Maj. William Cage is assigned to fight the invasion and dies, he ends up in a wild time loop where he relives that fight and his death over and over. However, after each reset, he comes back with the knowledge of his previous battles. With time, and the help of Emily Blunt’s Sgt. Rita Vrataski, he gets closer to defeating the undefeatable.

Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are expected to write the sequel, while Doug Liman will return to direct. Shrapnel and Waterhouse are behind the Jesse Owens biopic Race, and Sony’s The Gray Man adaptation. There are currently no plot details and a release date hasn’t been set, but this will be one to keep an eye on.
