Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren Will Return to the Fast & Furious Franchise

This week in the neverending Fast & Furious pandemic: Vin Diesel has announced the return of Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren to the $5.1-billion franchise in a foretelling Instagram video.

During the video, which also served as a weird, unsponsored promotion for the Dominican Republic tourism bureau, Diesel noted filming for the ninth installment in the franchise was already underway and “a lot of the original cast” was present, including “Oscar winners” and “some new surprises.”

The Oscar winners, of course, were both Theron and Mirren, who made their franchise debut in 2017’s Fate of the Furious, where Theron played a cyberterrorist, and Mirren portrayed the mother of Jason Statham’s Deckard and Luke Evans’ Owen.

One of Diesel’s aforementioned “new surprises” is the addition of John Cena to the cast, who is shockingly not the first WWE wrestler to appear in the franchise. Details of Cena’s role in the film have yet to be revealed, but Diesel noted in the video that Cena is “going to completely shine in this movie.”

Justin Lin, who helmed Fast & Furious 6, has returned to direct the ninth installment, which will also feature the franchise’s core cast of Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and, of course, Ludacris.

Fast & Furious 9 is set to arrive on May 22, 2020, but you can see Mirren reprise her role as Magdalene Shaw in the forthcoming Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw on Aug. 2.

Also—since when does Diesel have 55.6 million followers on Instagram? What a power move for a man with such a pixelated icon and no bio.

Anyway, check out his Instagram video below.
