Netflix has announced that Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez will star in the streaming platform’s forthcoming post-apocalyptic thriller Awake, directed by Mark Raso.
With a script penned by Raso, his brother Joseph Raso and Greg Poirier, the film’s official logline describes the project as a science-fiction thriller set in a world where a sudden global event wipes out all electronics and humankind’s ability to sleep. After all hell breaks loose, only Rodriguez’s character, an ex-soldier with a troubled past, holds the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter.
Rodriguez will also serve as an executive producer alongside Poirier and both Raso brothers. The project is being produced by Canadian entertainment giant Entertainment One.
It’s safe to say that Rodriguez can’t sit still. Just in the first half of 2019, the actress starred in the Columbia Pictures film Miss Bala, voiced the titular character of Netflix’s animated series Carmen Sandiego and starred in (and produced) Netflix’s warmly received rom-com Someone Great.
A release date, other cast additions and further plot details have yet to be announced.
