The Teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is Marvel’s Most-Watched Ever

Guardians of The Galaxy was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2014 and that goodwill seems to be rolling over to the sequel, too.

Writer-director James Gunn revealed this morning that the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was viewed 81 million times in its first 24 hours, making it the second most-watched teaser ever, trailing only that other Disney property, Beauty and the Beast, and the most-watched Marvel teaser ever.

Gunn also mentioned that the full trailer is on its way: “You guys can’t imagine what they deal with. I’m a maniac. Now they’re gonna have to deal with it again as we prep the FULL TRAILER … ” But we probably won’t be seeing that for a few months. As a fun little bonus, Gunn also said that the song used in the trailer, “Fox on the Run” by Sweet, hit number one on the iTunes Rock Chart after the trailer came out, the same thing that happened to Blue Swede’s “Hooked on A Feeling” after the first movie’s teaser.

And in other Guardians news, Vin Diesel is in the middle of doing press for XXX: Return of Xander Cage and when asked about Groot teaming up with other MCU heroes, he said, “I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you’re going to see a Groot/Rocket movie.” That could be a slip about Gunn’s plans for the crew after Vol. 2 and whatever the gang does in Avengers 4, or it could just be an offhand comment about how much Gunn likes the two characters together, which is very evident in the teaser for Vol. 2.
