Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day 2U Coming on Valentine’s Day 2019

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have set Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to 2017 surprise hit Happy Death Day, for a wide release on February 14, 2019, per Deadline.

Original leads Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are set to return, as well as original director Christopher Landon, who will also replace Scott Lobdell as writer this time around. Blumhouse head Jason Blum is producing, along with Angela Mancuso, John Baldecchi and franchise newcomer Samson Mucke.

Happy Death Day surprised viewers with a darkly humorous spin on its slasher Groundhog Day conceit, and topped a slow box office weekend opposite the second weekend of box office disappointment Blade Runner 2049 last October. The Blumhouse joint grossed over $122 million worldwide on a budget of less than $5 million, and was the low-budget horror studio’s third biggest hit that year behind only Get Out and Split.

The follow-up faces tougher competition, though, going up against 20th Century Fox’s latest X-Men installment Dark Phoenix, and Warner Bros.’ holiday-appropriate, Rebel Wilson-starring romantic comedy Isn’t It Romantic. Couples looking to catch something a bit different next Valentine’s Day now have another option.
