Take a Look Behind the Scenes of Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs

Fox Searchlight has released a featurette giving us an inside look at the making of the forthcoming Wes Anderson feature Isle of Dogs. Anderson goes back to the stop-motion animation method he used in Fantastic Mr. Fox for this one-of-a-kind movie. The featurette shows the intense animation process that the team of 25 animators and 10 assistants undertook while working on the film. The footage also reveals insight into the animators’ craft by sharing with fans the painstaking process of setting up each scene and the techniques used to get breath-taking performances out of inanimate objects.

Animation director for the movie Mark Waring reveals that cameras were placed on real-life dogs in order to make the movement of the stop-motion animals as realistic as possible. The characters were brought to life by the voice-performances of some Anderson’s regular actors, including Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Jeff Goldblum, as well as using other notable voices like Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand and Courtney B. Vance.

As previously reported, a special “Bring Your Own Dog (BYOD)” screening is scheduled for Monday, March 19 at The Roxie Theater in San Francisco, Calif., ahead of the film’s March 23 release.
