The Trip to Italy (2014 Sundance capsule)

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s dueling Michael Caine impressions are back. The Trip to Italy sees the British comics teamed back up with director Michael Winterbottom in this sequel to 2010’s The Trip, which shares the first film’s loose, improvised structure, inconsistent nature, and—most importantly—laughs. This time, the actors, playing themselves, are in Italy, driving to gorgeous seaside towns, visiting the sites where Lord Byron and Percy Shelley lived and eating six fancy lunches. The movie exists to showcase the comic brilliance of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and, in its best moments, does so splendidly. Fans of structure, discipline and concision need not trouble themselves, but fans of laughter will experience plenty.
