Jermaine Fowler Joins Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America

Jermaine Fowler is set to star opposite the returning Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America, Paramount’s forthcoming sequel to 1988’s Coming to America, per Variety.

Slated for an Aug. 7, 2020, release, Coming 2 America has bagged Craig Brewer, known for 2005’s Hustle & Flow and 2011’s Footloose, as director.

Kenya Barris of Black-ish fame will executive produce the film, the script for which was penned by the duo behind the original Coming to America, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.

Coming to America starred Eddie Murphy as Akeem, a charming, wealthy African prince who flees to America to escape an arranged marriage. Accompanied by a lovable sidekick played by Arsenio Hall, Akeem searches for his true queen while disguised as a foreign student and fast food worker. Despite mixed reviews, Coming to America grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. Last year, Paste ranked it among the best comedies of all time.

Best known for his starring role on the CBS sitcom Superior Donuts, Fowler heads to the Coming 2 America set fresh off working with Zoey Deutch in the comedic drama Buffaloed, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. Fowler also appeared in Boots Riley’s critically acclaimed Sorry to Bother You and the HBO comedy series Crashing.

As busy as ever, Fowler is also currently working on developing and executive producing a CBS series called The Come Up with Larry Wilmore and Quinta Bronson.
