Watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt Blow the Whistle in the First Full Trailer for Oliver Stone’s Snowden

No one will say it better than Edward Snowden himself, tweeting this trailer: “For two minutes and thirty nine seconds, everybody at NSA just stopped working.”

Chances are, he’s exactly right—the first long look at Oliver Stone’s Snowden is an utterly gripping one. Open Road Films released the full-length trailer today, a far more substantive bit of footage than last summer’s initial teaser. Snowden, the story of the polarizing NSA leaker, is Stone’s first feature film since 2012’s Savages.

The taut, visually rich trailer provides an excellent introduction to Snowden’s extensive cast, which includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the man himself, along with Shailene Woodley, Timothy Olyphant, a menacing Rhys Ifans, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood and Joely Richardson. Stone co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), basing it on journalist Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Time of the Octopus, a novel written by Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena.

Anticipation for Snowden has been building steadily for quite some time: the long-gestating project was originally scheduled for a Dec. 25, 2015 release before being pushed back to May 13, then again to this fall. Thanks to this trailer, our excitement about the film continues to mount.

Snowden hits theaters Sept. 16. Watch the trailer above, while the NSA watches you watch it.
