The New Trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Exists Whether You Watch It or Not

With an unknowing beachgoer unearthing a mysterious game board, the new trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle makes its connection to the original Robin Williams film clear. Only this time, players of Jumanji instead find themselves sucked into a videogame. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, Sony Pictures’ new film is a more modern interpretation of the “jungle game comes to life” premise.

In a Breakfast Club scenario, four very different teenagers in detention encounter the vintage Jumanji videogame, and find themselves within the (quite crystal-clear and high-definition) world of the game, in the shoes of characters against their type. The nerd becomes the buff explorer (Johnson), the jock becomes the short weapons mule (Hart), the wallflower becomes the stereotypically skimpy strong female (Gillan) and the “hot girl” becomes, well, Jack Black. Nick Jonas also features in the trailer as a (non-playable) character who acts as a guide to the game’s avatars, and Rhys Darby and Bobby Cannavale make split-second appearances.

Because the marketing team can’t seem to think of any better songs, this trailer uses “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses, just as the first trailer did. The part-sequel/part-reboot comes to theaters on Dec. 20, because what says Christmas like a jungle movie?
