The First Logan Trailer Is Here

After weeks of little teases, the first trailer for Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie Logan is here.

With Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” playing over the top, we see old man Logan, and he is looking very much worse for wear. Instead of going the gonzo, sci-fi, action route, the trailer has a very low-key, slow, Unforgiven-style tragic vibe.

According to the movie’s plot description, mutants births are on the decline so something very bad must have happened after that perfectly happy ending we got in Days of Future Past. In Old Man Logan, the comic the movie is based on, Wolverine is tricked into killing all of the X-Men, and he is seen at somebody’s funeral at the start of this trailer, but that seems a little too gruesome for even this movie, which is angling for an R rating.

The decline in mutant births plot makes sense as the catalyst for why Logan and Professor X are trying to save Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, who is a clone of Logan’s. We get a quick look of her doing the berserker rage thing to some faceless soldiers before getting a brief glimpse of her distinctive two claws (as opposed to Wolverine’s three) as she tries to skewer Logan, that presumably being their first encounter.

Perhaps the most concerning part of this trailer is the shot of Laura and Logan looking down at something while Logan holds a shovel. If this is going to be the swan song for the original X-Men cast, it’ll be bittersweet to see where all these beloved characters end up.

Logan hits theaters March 3, 2017. Watch the trailer above.
