Sony has shared a first-look photo from (and the release window for) its Mister Rogers biopic Thursday in a tweet from the studio’s official account. You Are My Friend stars Tom Hanks as Rogers and tells the story of his friendship with journalist Tom Junod.
Hanks was revealed to be taking on the role earlier this January. The rest of the film’s crew includes Marielle Heller as director, with Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster writing the script. Rogers’ compassion will take center stage, as the creators see it as relevant now more than ever.
Producers Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf said in a January statement, “Now more than ever, we all need a re-introduction to Fred Rogers’ message of uncompromising love and kindness between all living things. Mari Heller is the perfect visionary filmmaker to bring Noah and Micah’s script to life and because of her vision and this remarkable script, we have the quintessential actor to play Fred Rogers.”
Look for You Are My Friend to hit theaters in October of 2019.
