New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in December

December is a momentous month in several respects: It brings us the peak of the holiday season, the restorative transition from one year to the next, and perhaps most meaningful of all, a towering pile of new programming on Netflix. There’s no lack of noteworthy film and television headed to the big red streaming service next month, so here’s Paste’s take on everything you and your loved ones ought to be queuing up come December.

It’s an enormous month for Netflix originals, with much-anticipated titles spanning the spectrum of feature films, documentaries, TV series and comedy specials. The splashiest film among the bunch is Suicide Squad and End of Watch director David Ayer’s Bright, starring Will Smith and scripted by Max Landis. Streaming on Dec. 22, the big-budget action-thriller, a bizarre-looking blend of gritty crime drama and high fantasy set in an alternate-reality Los Angeles, “follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.” Whether Bright justifies Netflix’s reported $90 million investment remains to be seen, but there’s no question it will be a spectacle. Also incoming is Gay Talese documentary Voyeur, which follows the famed journalist “as he reports one of the most controversial stories of his career: a portrait of a Colorado motel owner, Gerald Foos. For decades, Foos secretly watched his guests with the aid of specially designed ceiling vents, peering down from an “observation platform” he built in the motel’s attic. He kept detailed journals of his guests’ most private moments — from the mundane to the shocking — but most of all he sought out, spied on, and documented one thing: strangers having sex. Talese’s insatiable curiosity leads him to turn his gaze to a man accustomed to being the watcher, exploring a tangle of ethical questions: What does a journalist owe to his subjects? How can a reporter trust a source who has made a career of deception? Who is really the voyeur?” We’ll find out on Dec. 1.

Also debuting on that day is the streamer’s first German-language series, Dark, heading up Netflix’s original TV slate. The latest trailer for the series, which Netflix describes as “a family saga with a supernatural twist,” draws clear inspiration from the likes of Stranger Things and IT, while also setting itself apart with eye-popping cinematography and a brooding inscrutability, so we’re intrigued to see what kind of impression Dark is able to make on the viewing public. One week later on Dec. 8, season two of The Crown arrives, in which “a damaged British monarchy must confront its past in order to have a future.” The Emmy-winning series’ second installment will be the last for its current star Claire Foy, who will be replaced by Olivia Colman as an older and wiser Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown’s third and fourth seasons. From there, we get the fourth season of the Cillian Murphy-starring crime period drama Peaky Blinders on Dec. 21, the third season of massively successful sequel sitcom Fuller House on Dec. 22 and the second season of Netflix’s first-ever Spanish-language series, period drama Cable Girls, on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). And the high-profile comedy specials just keep on coming for Netflix, with Dave Chappelle’s recently announced Equanimity barely sneaking into 2017 with a New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) debut. Also on the way are new stand-up specials from Craig Ferguson (Dec. 5), Judd Apatow (Dec. 12), Russell Howard (Dec. 19) and Todd Barry (Dec. 26).

Now that we’ve traversed next month’s ocean of original Netflix content, we come to all the licensed movies and TV you and yours have to look forward to. Some of the most noteworthy additions include Stanley Kubrick’s chilling Vietnam war drama Full Metal Jacket, the Wachowski siblings-scripted dystopian drama V for Vendetta, James Gunn’s delightful MCU entry Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Disney’s The Santa Clause trilogy—yes, they made two more of those—due out just in time for Christmas. On the smaller screen side, Netflix is adding the fourth season of AMC’s acclaimed tech drama Halt and Catch Fire next month, so your excuses for not getting caught up on that show are disappearing by the day.

And lest we forget, December spells the end of some beloved streaming TV and movies, most notably the first 11 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, vanishing from Netflix on Dec. 9. The long-running FX comedy, affectionately known as “Seinfeld on crack,” is a fan favorite with immense replay value, so you might want to throw those DVDs on your holiday wishlist and get down with the gang while you can. Also departing the streaming service are 2014 crime journalism (“If it bleeds, it leads”) thriller Nightcrawler, Mel Brooks’ classic, Gene Wilder-starring comedy Young Frankenstein, underrated 2006 action flick Lucky Number Slevin, Morgan Spurlock’s damning McDonald’s doc Super Size Me and the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, The Curse of the Black Pearl.
