Watch the Profane Red Band Trailer for A24 Buddy Comedy Never Goin’ Back

A24’s Never Goin’ Back, the debut film from writer-director Augustine Frizzell, received its first red band trailer on Wednesday. The clip reveals a raunchy, delightfully off-kilter comedy, with chemistry to spare between its “dirty, dirty” duo of Maia Mitchell (The Fosters) and Camila Morrone (Death Wish). As you’ll see in the trailer, SNL’s Kyle Mooney also stars.

The film’s official synopsis describes it as “a fresh and funny look at female friendship” that follows Angela (Mitchell) and Jessie (Morrone) as they escape their waitressing jobs at a low-rent Texas diner for a fun-filled trip to the beach in Galveston. Over the course of just a few days, Never Goin’ Back follows the hard-partying duo’s funny and unpredictable misadventures as they try to raise money via increasingly madcap schemes on the streets of suburban Dallas.

Between the film’s Texas setting, and the naturalistic camerawork and gleefully profane banter showcased in today’s trailer, Never Goin’ Back strikes us as Superbad by way of Richard Linklater. The film debuted at Sundance earlier this year, garnering widely positive reviews, and A24 acquired distribution rights to Never Goin’ Back ahead of its March showing at SXSW.

Dallas-born writer-director Frizzell has 27 credits to her name as an actor, including roles in Trey Edward Shults’ (It Comes at Night) Krisha, and David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, A Ghost Story and Pete’s Dragon. She will also helm the HBO teen drama pilot Euphoria, based on a 2012 Israeli series of the same name, following a group of high school students who attempt to cope with their uncertain futures through drugs, sex and violence.

Never Goin’ Back opens on Aug. 3. See the film’s poster and NSFW first trailer below.
