Movies News New York Film Critics Circle

The love was spread far and wide when the New York Film Critics Circle announced their 2016 award recipients. Although Damien Chazelle’s La La Land walked away with the top prize, both Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea earned their fair share of recognition, as well.

Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams were both rewarded for their work in Manchester by the Sea, and the film was also recognized for its screenplay, which was penned by director Kenneth Lonergan. Barry Jenkins picked up the Best Director prize for Moonlight, and Mahershala Ali’s performance was also recognized, as was James Laxton’s cinematography.

Two special awards will also be given out by the NYFCC. The first will be given to Scorsese’s long-time editing partner Thelma Schoonmaker, and the second will be awarded to the 1991 Julie Dash film Daughters of the Dust, which was a major influence on Beyonce’s Lemonade.
