New on Redbox: All the Movies Coming in March

It’s understandable to be a bit exhausted by movies at the moment, what with the months of awards season hullabaloo that preceded this week. But Redbox—your friendly neighborhood feature film vending machine—is adding a batch of new titles to their kiosks and digital video on demand platform, and darned if we aren’t duty-bound to tell you which.

The first handful of exciting titles arrive on March 5, led by Yorgos Lanthimos-directed period drama The Favourite (coming to kiosks and VOD), one of the most-nominated films at this year’s Academy Awards. In his review for Paste, Kyle Turner praised the film—which stars Olivia Colman (in an Oscar-winning turn) as Queen Anne, and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone as opposing companions vying for the queen’s favor—as “a blazing and burning feat of melodrama.” Another Oscar winner on its way (to kiosks only) is National Geographic documentary Free Solo, which follows the harrowing journey of climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to scale Yosemite National Park’s 3,000-foot-tall rock face, El Capitan, without a rope. And not to be overlooked on March 5, either, are acclaimed boxing drama sequel Creed II and Natalie Portman-starring pop star drama Vox Lux, both of which are coming to kiosks and VOD.

Redbox’s next big day is March 12, though the titles arriving on this particular date trend more towards infamy than acclaim. First up via kiosks and VOD is the ponderously titled and shoddily plotted Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the latest adventure set in J.K. Rowling’s increasingly bloated Wizarding World—ironically, the Potter-verse feels less and less magical with each franchise-stretching entry. Next up, also via kiosks and VOD, is newly minted Best Picture winner Green Book, a maddeningly facile exploration of racial prejudice and tolerance made borderline-watchable only by a pair of Oscar nominees, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. And completing this ignominious triumvirate is one of 2018’s biggest box-office bombs, Mortal Engines, coming to kiosks and VOD. The fantastical would-be blockbuster—set in a world in which enormous, predatory moving cities roam freely, consuming everything in their paths—made only $15.95 million in the U.S., an absolutely brutal take given its $100 million production budget, though some have argued the film was better than its fate suggested.

The one 2018 film no one is arguing about, however, arrives in kiosks on March 19, kicking off a torrid end-of-month run for Redbox: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, this year’s Academy Award winner for best animated feature film, and one of Paste’s top films of any stripe from last year. Wrote Paste Movies editor Michael Burgin in his review of the film, “Directors Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, writer-director Rodney Rothman, and writer Phil Lord have made a film that lives up to all the adjectives one associates with Marvel’s iconic wallcrawler. Amazing. Spectacular. Superior. (Even ‘Friendly’ and ‘Neighborhood’ fit.)” Following Spidey into kiosks on March 22 is Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, itself also an Oscar nominee, while Aquaman, the DCEU’s biggest commercial success to date, comes to kiosks and VOD on March 26. Last and not even close to least is Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning James Baldwin adaptation If Beale Street Could Talk, the “heartbreaking bravery” of which Paste Movies’ Dom Sinacola lauded in his review of the film. That title also arrives via kiosks and VOD on March 26.
