Reese Witherspoon Will Produce and Star in Two Netflix Rom-Coms

Reese Witherspoon has clearly figured it all out. The 44-year-old American actress has been prolifically busy as of late, especially in the TV world, producing and starring in a number of series, shepherding her own projects to success. And you can now add two more notable projects to that list, as Witherspoon is headed to Netflix for a two-film deal. The Oscar-winner will both produce and star in two films that are each described as romantic comedies, returning her to the roots that first won her fame in the 1990s.

The first of those films is titled Your Place or Mine, to be written and directed by Aline Brosh of The Devil Wears Prada and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. According to Vanity Fair, “The plot revolves around two long-distance best friends; when one of them takes the plunge to pursue a lifelong dream, the other stays behind to watch her teenage son.” It’s not entirely clear what role Witherspoon would be playing.

The other film is The Cactus, an adaptation of the 2019 novel by author Sarah Haywood. The book had previously appeared as a selection of Witherspoon’s influential book club, so this selection makes a deal of sense. The Cactus is described as revolving around “a 45-year-old woman who has an unexpected pregnancy and must suddenly reorient her life around the surprising news.” Seems clear-cut who Witherspoon would by playing there. One wonders if she started imagining herself as playing the role as soon as she picked up a copy of the book!

In recent years, Witherspoon has emerged as a TV power player, starring in Apple’s The Morning Show and Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere, in addition to also producing and starring in HBO’s Big Little Lies. It’s actually been only a few years since her last cinematic romantic comedy as well, 2017’s Home Again, but it seems safe to say that her Netflix projects will ultimately be seen by a much larger audience. After all, if every film Adam Sandler produces for the streamer immediately hits #1 on the service in terms of viewership, you have to think that new rom-coms from Reese Witherspoon will probably bury the needle. Netflix is doubtlessly assuming the same.

We’ll bring you more information on the production and release dates of Your Place or Mine and The Cactus as it arrives.
