Watch the Captivating Trailer for Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma

Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma won’t be released on Netflix for another month, but the film’s official trailer, released Tuesday, already feels like a victory lap. The captivating trailer, set to Pink Floyd’s “The Great Gig In The Sky,” is virtually wordless except for the superimposed accolades of film critics aplenty, many of whom are already calling Roma Cuarón’s masterwork.

Both today’s trailer and its preceding teaser go light on plot, opting instead to establish tone and scope—the black-and-white Roma, Cuarón’s first film since Gravity in 2013, feels like an all-encompassing slice of life, comprising love, war and other such elemental human concepts. Though the film is being pushed as Cuarón’s most personal, it also may very well be his most universal.

Netflix synopsizes the film as follows:

Roma follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s.

Netflix is taking unprecedented measures to get its awards contenders in front of audiences, giving Roma a significant theatrical release window ahead of its streaming debut. The film opens on Nov. 21 in Los Angeles, New York and Mexico before expanding to additional U.S. cities, Toronto and London on Nov. 29, then continuing to roll out in other U.S. markets and international territories on Dec. 5. The film goes wide and streams globally on Netflix on Dec. 14, screening in more than 30 countries worldwide, in some cases in its native 70mm.
