2017 SAG Award Nominations Announced: Manchester by the Sea, Game of Thrones Lead

Movies News SAG Awards

Often an interesting Oscar bellwether, the SAG Awards announced their 2017 nominations Wednesday morning. The Screen Actors Guild is the largest guild in the film industry, and the awards honor film, television and stunt performances by actors.

SAG is composed of nearly 200,000 members, including film and television performers, radio personalities and other commercial media professionals. The nominations are selected by a randomly drawn committee that reviews For Your Consideration materials and votes on the final nominees. Final balloting is then opened up to all members.

In this year’s batch of nominees, Manchester by the Sea leads with four nominations, including best ensemble cast. Manchester will compete in that category against the casts of Captain Fantastic, Moonlight, Fences and Hidden Figures.

Mahershala Ali was the only actor to receive three nominations, one for his supporting performance in Moonlight, and two more for best ensemble with the casts of Moonlight and Hidden Figures.

On the TV side, Game of Thrones led the pack alongside several new shows, including Stranger Things, Westworld, The Crown and The People v. O.J. Simpson, each of which earned three nominations.

The SAG Awards tend to be predictive of the acting races at the Oscars, where actors make up the largest voting body. Check out the full list of nominees below.
