Stranger Things‘ Shannon Purser Stars in Netflix Film Sierra Burgess is a Loser

Barb is back (well, as close to back as we’re going to get): Stranger Things actress Shannon Purser is returning to Netflix in its new rom-com/coming-of-age film Sierra Burgess is a Loser, due out Sept. 7. Sierra Burgess (Purser) is naturally the main character in the film named after her—she’s also a loser, or at least that’s what the so-called popular kids at her high school keep telling her. She’s also a catfish … accidentally.

A band geek and top student, Sierra is trying to get in Stanford. Unfortunately, when her school guidance counselor asks, “What’s your sell?” she draws a blank. During this stressful time of applying to college and looking for something that makes her stand out, a boy falls into the mix. When Sierra’s phone number somehow falls into the hands of a boy named Jamey, who mistakenly thinks the number belongs to popular girl Veronica, they begin to chat and he falls for “Veronica.” Afraid to reveal her true identity to him, Sierra recruits the real Veronica to help catfish him.

More than Jamey not knowing who she is, beyond a “sell,” Sierra is figuring out what makes her, her. “I don’t know what I am,” Sierra says just before the movie title flashes up: Sierra Burgess is a Loser.

Starring alongside Purser as romantic lead Jamey is Noah Centineo from The Fosters, and Kristine Froseth as mean girl and partner in crime Veronica.
