Become Entranced by the Trailer for the New Terrence Malick Film Song to Song

Terrence Malick has seen a prolific surge in the past few years with Tree of Life, To the Wonder, Knight of Cups and his beginning-of-life documentary Voyage of Time. Each of these films feature beautiful cinematography, A-list stars and a lush score. Broad Green Pictures has just released the trailer for his new film, Song to Song, and things haven’t changed yet for the 74-year old director.

The plot is described as follows in a press release:

In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples—struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman)—chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

It’s an interesting premise, and a compelling trailer that features the ever-mighty handiwork of Malick’s go-to DP, Emmanuel Lubezki, who is doing some crazy camera work here. That’s one interesting consistency about Malick’s work: he treats the camera, or the audience, as a creeping onlooker into really emotional and private moments in relationships. The crossed love triangle is a favorite narrative point of his lately, and it works really well in this trailer. Also, the music is really great, with what sounds like a song performed by Ryan Gosling later in the trailer. Plus, what are Flea and Iggy Pop doing here?

Check out the trailer in the embed above. Song to Song comes to theaters in New York and Los Angeles on March 17. The film will also open SXSW this year, which is incredibly fitting, given the Austin musical backdrop.
