Starship Troopers is Getting a Reboot, Like You Always Wanted

Reboots rule in Hollywood these days, and it looks like Starship Troopers is no exception. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures is remaking the film in the hopes of starting a franchise.

The studio has tapped Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who also wrote the forthcoming Baywatch reboot, to write the screenplay. Producer Neal H. Moritz of the Fast & Furious franchise is also involved, as is producer Toby Jaffe, who worked with Moritz on Total Recall.

Starship Troopers is based on a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein that told the story of a soldier named Johnny Rico, who moves up the ranks during a war on murderous alien bugs. The 1997 effort was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who used many of the themes present in the book to take a satirical look at fascism and militarism.

The original was a mixed success upon its release, but eventually became a cult classic. The reboot is going to be an adaptation of Heinlein’s novel instead of a remake of the film, and will not feature any members of the 1997 film’s cast.
