Suicide Squad Reshoots May Be Adding More Humor to the Film After Dour Batman v Superman

Fresh out of the rumor mill: Reported reshoots on Warner Bros. Suicide Squad, due out Aug. 5, may be centered around adding more humor and levity into the final product. This would be in direct response to the scathing critical and audience reaction to the ultra-dour, humorless seriousness of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in particular.

This news comes courtesy of Birth Movies Death, which cites an unnamed, “excellent source” for the information, so take that with a grain of salt. Interestingly, though, it makes it sound like the fairly well-received recent trailer—the one set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”—was not at all indicative of the film’s overall tone before the reshoots. That trailer, you can view below.

Reportedly, that trailer contained most, if not all of the finished film’s jokes. When response to it came back positively, presumably coupled with complaints about the over-serious tone of Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. was given pretty clear incentive to bring the final film’s tone closer to the one portrayed in the trailer. Or in other words: Closer to the tone of most films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which are comedies as much as they are action or adventure movies.

Ultimately, it seems like good news—few film fans want to see another deathly serious film in the newly minted D.C. cinematic universe. One has to wonder how this will affect the vision for the Justice League film, which will begin shooting soon. We’ll just have to wait and see.
