In terms of modern pop-cultural reboots we still haven’t quite made up our minds on, The Addams Family lands near the top of the list. There’s no debating the top-tier quality of its voice cast, boasting the likes of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Allison Janney and Bette Middler, but how difficult will it be for audiences to separate these new versions of the beloved Addams characters from say, the versions made famous by the two live-action film versions starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston?
Seeing the new cast in action in the film’s first trailer, which you can watch below, still leaves us wondering. MGM’s The Addams Family is employing a very quirky, unusual animation style/character models, based heavily on the original Addams Family comics by Charles Addams, which may work in its favor, or ultimately push audiences away. Likewise, the voices take some getting used to—especially Nick Kroll’s squeaky Fester, who sounds nothing like Christopher Lloyd’s growl from the 1991 film. Perhaps this variant will just take some time to get used to?
The plot, for what it’s worth, sounds like it would have fit perfectly into any of the previous Addams Family adaptations:
The Addams family’s lives begin to unravel when they face-off against a treacherous, crafty reality-TV host while also preparing for their extended family to arrive for a major celebration.
That reality TV host is played by Academy Award-winner Allison Janney, who doesn’t make an appearance in this first teaser. What kind of show will this be, exactly? Lifestyles of the Rich and Ghoulish?
The Addams Family is fitting schedule for a release in the pre-Halloween window, on Oct. 11, 2019. Check out the full teaser below.
