The Conjuring Franchise to Produce Another Spinoff, The Nun

Movies News

The Conjuring franchise is creating yet another spinoff, but this time, it will be based on a character who wasn’t even in the original script of The Conjuring 2, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Initially, the mysterious and demonic nun character was not in the sequel to the 2013 horror flick until about three months before the premiere.

Director James Wan and New Line Cinema had a version of the film starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as (in)famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In this version, the villain was a demonic figure with horns, but Wan created the character of the nun at the last minute. After pitching the new concept to the studio, Wan got to work in March. While some changes could be made digitally, like the painting done by Wilson’s character, Bonnie Aarons played the nun in various terrifying scenes.

Now, the nun is getting her own film, to be penned by The Conjuring 2 writer David Leslie Johnson. Wan and producer Peter Safran will team up again to create the spinoff, creatively called The Nun.

The Conjuring 2 was the number-one film in North America its opening weekend and has already grossed more than $100 million globally. Read our review here.
