Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman Gets First-Look Photos, World Premiere Date

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman has been shrouded in mystery since its announcement back in 2016, but that veil is finally going to be pulled back when it’s released this fall. The New York Film Festival announced Monday that the film will have its world premiere as the opening night headliner on Friday, Sept. 27. In tow with the announcement came two first-look images from the film.

The two stills from The Irishman show De Niro and Pacino being escorted out of a building amid a ravenous crowd, and De Niro playing barkeep to Joe Pesci. The trio star as Frank Sheeran (De Niro), Russell Bufalino (Pesci) and Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino) in this true-crime story based on Charles Brandt’s 2005 book I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran and the Inside Story of the Mafia, the Teamsters, and the Last Ride of Jimmy Hoffa. Set across different decades, the film has made headlines for its eye-popping budget being used to digitally de-age De Niro and Pacino, though these images aren’t showing off that technology just yet.

NYFF Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones shares high praise for the film in a statement:

The Irishman is so many things: rich, funny, troubling, entertaining and, like all great movies, absolutely singular. It’s the work of masters, made with a command of the art of cinemat that I’ve seen very rarely in my lifetime, and it plays out at a level of subtlety and human intimacy that truly stunned me. All I can say is that the minute it was over my immediate reaction was that I wanted to watch it all over again.

The Irishman is described as “a film about friendship and loyalty between men who commit unspeakable acts and turn on a dime against each other, and the possibility of redemption in a world where it seems as distant as the moon.” It also stars Harvey Keitel, and was penned by Gangs of New York screenwriter Steve Zaillian.

We don’t have a firm date on which the film will get a wide theatrical release or hit Netflix yet. In the meanwhile, you can revisit the film’s first teaser trailer here and check out the two new images below.
