Mutants, Rejoice! Shudder Has Ordered a New Season of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs

Like the villain in an ‘80s slasher flick, comedian and midnight movie host Joe Bob Briggs will be back for a sequel. The Last Drive-In with with Joe Bob Briggs has been renewed for a second season on streaming service Shudder.

The horror aficionado revealed the news on Twitter in typical redneck Joe Bob fashion, sipping a beer, educating followers on a mutated breed of carp swimming around the East River and making sure he would be paid for the new season—$400, which is a steal, really.

This news couldn’t come at a better time for his devoted fanbase—”mutants”—as the final episode of the first season airs this Friday, May 24. Briggs and his co-star Diana “Darcy the Mail Girl” Prince guided viewers through a nine-week run of double features, including cult classics like 1984’s C.H.U.D., the Alien-biting, Italian-made Contamination and even the arthouse film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

Briggs is the comedic persona of John Irving Bloom, a long-time film critic and supporter of the artistic merits of splatter and exploitation films. The Last Drive-In is actually a continuation of the late-night movie host’s television show format that extends back to 1986’s Drive-In Theater on The Movie Channel. Shudder live-streamed a 24-hour marathon of films in July 2018 meant to be Briggs’ final gig before retirement, but the positive reaction led to a couple holiday-themed specials, followed by The Last Drive-In itself.

No launch date has been announced for season two as of yet. The season one finale of The Last Drive-In will air this Friday, May 24, at 9 p.m. ET.
