Check Out the Whimsical First Trailer for Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Disney has unveiled its first footage from the upcoming The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a film due out in Nov. of 2018 that follows in the wake of so many other recent, wildly successful Disney live-action adaptations, including the likes of Beauty and the Beast or Maleficent. Set to the familiar “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” which has been given something of a dramatic remix, the film looks to be taking the classic Nutcracker story and giving it a treatment that partially recalls Tim Burton’s fantasy world from Alice in Wonderland.

Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar) stars in the film as Clara, a young girl who wanders away on Christmas Eve and finds herself in a magical realm, Narnia-style. Major supporting roles are Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer and Keira Knightly as the Sugar Plum Fairy, calling to mind Knightly’s attachment to the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean films. Also a no-brainer in terms of casting was the hiring of famed ballet dancer Misty Copeland as “The Ballerina.”

As is the way of modern blockbuster advertising, this version of The Nutcracker promises that “the legend you know … has a dark side.” Where have we heard that before? Oh, that’s right: Just about everywhere. But that’s how it goes these days, folks. Regardless, the sets, costumes and practical effects for this film look absolutely stunning. As with the other recent Disney live-action ventures, it’s sure to be a sumptuous visual feast.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (how much you wanna bet we get a sequel for each realm?) is scheduled for a Nov. 2, 2018 release.
