A Political Conversation Between Family Members Takes a Turn for the Worst in Teaser for Ike Barinholtz’s The Oath

We all know that it’s a bad idea to discuss politics at the dinner table, and yet we just can’t stray away from it, especially not when our family’s views are different from our own. There’s something about yelling across the table about why your party is right and the other is wrong that is so enticing and unsatisfying, all at the same time. After all, one strained dinner conversation won’t make grandma any less racist.

Ike Barinholtz’s new film, The Oath, plays on just that concept—only it takes a turn for the violent, because words aren’t cutting it. In a teaser for the movie released Friday, Chris (Barinholtz) asks God to “give him the strength to get through the weekend, please” before getting punched in the face and tasing his own wife (Tiffany Haddish).

In the film, Haddish and Barinholtz have just learned that the White House is asking Americans to sign a loyalty oath to the President, with the deadline looming on Thanksgiving Day. So, naturally, the controversial oath is discussed at Thanksgiving dinner, where things quickly spiral out of control. Watch the teaser below.

The Oath also stars Portlandia star and Sleater-Kinney member Carrie Brownstein, along with Billy Magnussen, Meredith Hagner, Jon Barinholtz, Nora Dunn, John Cho and Chris Ellis. The movie debuts in theaters on Oct. 12 via Roadside Attractions.
