20th Century Fox has released their final trailer for the forthcoming War for the Planet of the Apes ahead of its July 14 release. The film is directed by Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, working off a script by him and screenwriter Mark Bomback.

The trailer suggests a further blurring of the lines between humanity and monkeys. The majority of the apes in the trailer speak clear English, ride horses, perform complex breach-and-clear tactics, and engage in existential discussions about the purpose of monkey-kind. There’s a brief shot depicting at least a handful of monkey-traitors assisting with the reloading of a human-manned machine gun. On the other side, Caesar appears to adopt an orphaned, human child. The trailer suggests the question of what it means to be human will be thoroughly explored between rocket launcher explosions and Woody Harrelson shaving scenes.

Given the amount of firepower on display for the human contingent, it forces us to wonder how exactly a bunch of horse-mounted apes will defeat such a heavily armed armored cavalry. It’s possible the brief clip of an avalanche could be part of the answer. Regardless, it seems unlikely that this is a war humanity will win.

Even though humanity looks just about finished, War is unlikely to definitively conclude the series, as a fourth film is reportedly in the works. Look for Building a Peaceful, Agrarian Culture on the Planet of the Apes to hit theaters sometime in the next few years.
