Gal Gadot Addresses Wonder Woman’s Bisexuality

Movies News wonder woman

It’s Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary this year and the character’s never been in a better place. She’s had a couple of fantastic runs in the comics recently, she’s getting her first movie next year, and a couple of weeks ago her status as a queer icon was finally made canon.

In an interview with Variety, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot was asked about that recent piece of news, and she gave just about as good an answer as one could hope for in today’s day and age for the star of a mainstream Hollywood movie.

Q: Greg Rucka, a longtime writer of Wonder Woman, believes the character is bisexual. He reasons that because she lived on Themyscira, which is populated solely by women, she must have had gay relationships. Is Wonder Woman bisexual in the film?

A: It’s not something we’ve explored. It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense. In this movie she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.

So Diana’s bisexuality isn’t going to be seen in the movie at all (it wasn’t even talked about prior to production), but it is a possibility for this version of the character. That’s not ideal, but it’s probably the best we’re going to get for a while, and hey, baby steps and all that. Maybe in Wonder Woman 2, it’ll be coyly hinted at and by Wonder Woman 3 it’ll even be mentioned in passing.

Wonder Woman is due out on June 2, 2017. Watch the film’s Comic-Con trailer below.
