Daily Dose: Aldous Harding, “The Barrel”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

New Zealander singer-songwriter Aldous Harding has announced her third album, Designer, due April 26 on 4AD. Lovely lead single “The Barrel” launched Tuesday, accompanied by a puzzler of a music video.

Designer, the follow-up to Harding’s 2017 4AD debut Party, is a collection of songs she wrote during her 100-show summer tour behind her last album. She reunited with Party producer John Parish to record the new nine-song set, with accompaniment from Huw Evans (H. Hawkline), Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo), drummer Gwion Llewelyn and violinist Clare Mactaggart.

The quietly off-kilter video for “The Barrel,” co-directed by Martin Sagadin and Harding herself, finds the artist singing her new song in an unusual outfit and environment; she dances in place behind a Mona Lisa smile, dressed like a witchy pilgrim throwing a one-woman party in the world’s biggest blanket fort. The clip has a trick or two up its sleeve, though, so you’ll want to see it through—the payoff takes the video’s unsettling charm up a notch.

Harding will support her new LP with headlining shows in North America, the U.K. and Europe throughout April and May, with a number of summer festival sets also on the docket.
