Listen to “Silhouettes,” the First Single off American Football’s Forthcoming Third Album

Legendary emo band American Football have returned with “Silhouettes,” the first single off their newly announced third self-titled album, due out Mar. 22, 2019, through Polyvinyl.

The Champaign-based band’s stature amongst the indie-rock landscape had grown to near-mythical status by the time of their 2016 reunion, which eventually spawned their second self-titled album. Their intricate, math-rock-esque guitar figures and Mike Kinsella’s plainly wrought vocals have stayed more or less intact over the years, but small changes creep in. “Silhouettes” opens with a sheet of icy bells that pull the seven-minute song into the realm of overture, gliding and rising like a piece of orchestral music.

The album was recorded at Arc Studios in Omaha, Neb., with producer Jason Cupp, and will feature appearances from Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Land Of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell and Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell.
