Toronto’s Austra stripped down to a 3-piece for their latest album—Future Politics, which released last month. The move hones the group’s elaborate cross of chamber pop, electronica and opera into a fiercely pure experience, centered around vocalist Katie Stelmanis’ fluttering soprano. Tracks like “Utopia” and “Future Politics” end up resembling the lost soundtrack to a Jodorowsky film, at once approachable yet layered with melodic and songwriting sophistication (not to mention some ‘70s sci-fi synths). Austra conveys that psychedelia live through fluttering ribbons, smoke and a barrage of light to complement its heady soundscapes. Photographer Drew Reynolds captured the band’s mind-melt show at Warsaw in Brooklyn last week. Austra is currently on tour in the United States and Europe through April.
