Daily Dose: Beach Bunny, “Prom Queen”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Chicago-based indie-pop band Beach Bunny have shared the video for “Prom Queen,” the title track off their 2018 EP of the same name.

The video, which dropped on New Year’s Eve and is billed as “a movie by Beach Bunny,” finds frontwoman Lili Trifilio grappling with the utter inescapability of societal standards of beauty for women. “I’m a defect, surgical project / It’s getting hard to breathe / there’s plastic wrap in my cheeks / Maybe I should try harder,” Trifilio sings.

From a laundromat to a park bench to her bedroom at home, Trifilio finds the tools of the beauty industry everywhere she goes. A hairdryer here, a tube of lipstick there—they infringe upon her every move, turning even moments of solitude and reflection into self-critical, self-conscious echo chambers. The titular prom queen is an ideal that she knows she’ll never reach, but her gripe is that she ever felt like she should. “I wanna be okay,” she sings in the song’s final refrain. It seems half-addressed to the world at large, and half to herself.
