Let Big Thief Make You Fall in Love on Country Highways with New Single, “Century”

Picture the last glow of sunset burning out over the horizon as miles of country freeway stretch listlessly before you. You’re in just the right middle-of-nowhere spot that the radio won’t tune into much of anything save for crackles and fuzz. Exhaustion sets into your shoulders, but the way the trees fly by, ignited by neon pinks and smoky purples as you blink the highway hypnosis from your eyes, you’re at peace with its simple allure.

Such is the charm of Big Thief, the Brooklyn four-piece who today released their sleepy-eyed single “Century,” the last release prior to their forthcoming album U.F.O.F., out May 3 via 4AD.

“Bugs died / On your windshield on the freeway / Wonder if you’ll be the same centuries flower / And we have the same power,” rasps Adrianne Lenker, her voice soft but centered, lulling the listener right into her spell. Paired with bassist Max Olearchik’s mesmerizing picking and James Krivchenia’s inventive drumming, a sort of Joni Mitchell-meets-Edie Brickell cadence is achieved. Buck Meek rounds out the welcoming velvet of cozy acoustics with an enthralling guitar solo.

Listen to “Century” below and check out Big Thief performing “Masterpiece” at Daytrotter back in 2016, along with their tour dates further down. You can preorder the album here, and revisit previous singles “Cattails” and “UFOF” while you’re at it.
