Watch boygenius Harmonize to the Dixie Chicks’ “Cowboy Take Me Away”

Boygenius—the indie-rock supergroup made up of Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker—covered the Dixie Chicks at a show this past weekend.

Tackling “Cowboy Take Me Away,” from the Dixie Chicks’ 1999 album Fly, the trio embraced their most folk-influenced performance to date. Baker and Bridgers were on mandolin and guitar, respectively, with each of the three picking up portions of the verses before all coming together on the harmony-heavy chorus. Consistent throughout the performance is the violin playing of Camille Falkner, who takes a solo about three quarters of the way through the performance in a move that has the other performers grinning into the bridge.

The trio have been on a theatre tour in support of the debut EP they surprise-released late last month (which we at Paste enjoyed quite a bit), performing full evenings of music that find each member performing a solo set before the full collaboration closes out the night. This most recent performance follows the group’s debut on Late Night with Seth Myers earlier this month, during which they played “Me & My Dog,” one of three singles from the EP.

Find the performance below, and revisit Bridgers and Baker’s Paste Studio sessions further down.
