In Bully’s “Feel The Same” Video, Food Equals Feeling

Created by LAZY MOM, a feminist, animation/photography duo who are literally eating the patriarchy, Bully’s new video for “Feel the Same” equates food with feeling—or at least a sense of restlessness. There are tortured themes of change in both the song and visual art components—viscerally, eggs turning into roses—but in the end, form trumps content. We end where we began: in the center of the cake, still salivating.

“I have been a huge fan of Lazy Mom for a few years now,” says Bully’s Alicia Bognanno in a statement. “Their ability to make vibrant, colorful art out of everyday objects amazes me. If you enjoy this video I HIGHLY recommend you check out their zine.”

We’re celebrating “Feel the Same” for the sake of a rock music video that doesn’t feature the rock band onstage, the rock band in the green room partying, the rock band walking around the most rock ‘n’ roll parts of (insert city here). Despite Bully’s gritty, down-to-earth visions in Losing, there is no nostalgia for genre or for rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic. There are simply cakes, eggs, roses and mysterious yellow slime, transforming and mirroring the interior landscape of womanhood in America.

In an interview with MOLD, LAZY MOM’s Josie Keefe and Phyllis Ma discuss how Trump’s America has affected their work: “At its core, Lazy Mom is about the social expectation that women should feed and nurture their families and loved ones. This idea has been deeply ingrained into human society for centuries,” Keefe says.

“Post-election, it felt like there was a dank cloud hanging over everything,” Ma adds. “It didn’t feel right to just keep making funny or pretty things, but at the same time, we needed a humorous and absurd outlet more than ever.”
