Caribou Announces First New Album in Six Years, Suddenly, Shares New Single “You and I”

Caribou’s Dan Snaith signaled his return in October with the aptly titled “Home,” his first new song in five years—Wednesday, he not only followed that up with another new single, “You and I,” but also announced his first new album since 2014’s Our Love: Caribou’s seventh studio LP Suddenly, out on Merge Records Feb. 28, 2020.

Snaith says of his dynamic and dreamy new track:

“You and I” was one of the first tracks on the album that I started, and one of the last tracks I finished; it existed in some form or other throughout the whole arc of making the record. It also captures a lot of what the record, and the title of the album, are about—the track changes suddenly and unpredictably, and it is about a change in my life that happened out of the blue.

A press release reinforces Snaith’s suggestion that we expect the unexpected, describing Suddenly as “the most surprising and unpredictable Caribou album to date,” and adding, “Though it retains the trademark Caribou warmth and technicolor, this album is littered with swerves and left turns. Songs drop out and morph into something else entirely just as they’re hitting their stride, samples chopped up beyond all recognition burst out of nowhere.”

“You and I” lives up to Suddenly’s shape-shifting sensibility: Its verses are built around lush chord swells and starry-eyed chimes that then mutate into woozy, fast-paced choruses underpinned by thumping drums and sampled shouts. Lightning eventually strikes in the form of an out-of-the-blue guitar solo, electrifying the already-restless track into something particularly wild.

Snaith winnowed over 900 song ideas down to Suddenly’s 12 tracks, saying, “I record music every day, and I love it—as much or more than I have always done. I feel very lucky—the thrill has never, ever left me.”
