Hear Carole King Command a New York Stage in 1993

The queen of standards, folk-rock, heartbreak and sensual ballads, Carole King is an American treasure. Though she could never be far from our consciousness for long, King has been on the mind more these past few years as the subject of a Broadway show about her life. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will show its final Broadway performance on Oct. 27, after more than 2,400 regular performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Luckily for us, we have a whole catalogue of Carole King to delve into even after the show is over, not to mention stunning Paste vault recordings like this show from 1993. On this day (Sept. 12) in 1993, the Tapestry singer gracefully took the stage at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, N.Y. for a career-spanning set that included beloved cuts from her 1971 album like “Beautiful” and “Smackwater Jack.” She also performs her classic “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” a song she originally wrote with Gerry Goffin for the Shirelles in 1960. This particular performance features King alone at the piano, backed by several vocalists and a softly strummed electric guitar.
