The internet’s most inexplicable (and inescapable) meme of the moment is Harambe, the 17-year-old endangered gorilla who was shot in May after a child fell into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. Tragedy plus not all that much time apparently equals comedy in this case, as the gorilla has befuddlingly become a go-to punchline. At the Reading Festival last week, Glaswegian synthpoppers CHVRCHES couldn’t resist getting in on the joke, dedicating their performance of The Bones of What You Believe track “Under the Tide” to the ubiquitous gorilla. “R.I.P. Harambe,” said synth player and occasional singer Martin Doherty, speaking for all of the interwebs. Watch the clip above.
