Courtney Barnett and Father Johny Misty Share Spotify Singles

Spotify doled out a double serving of singles Wednesday: Father John Misty and Courtney Barnett—who both released albums this year—each recorded an original and a cover for Spotify. Barnett delivered a rendition of Tell Me How You Really Feel track “Charity,” as well as a cover of Elyse Weinberg’s “Houses.” Misty sang “Mr. Tillman,” from God’s Favorite Customer, and covered Gillian Welch’s “Everything Is Free.”

If you’ve got a Spotify subscription, you can listen to Barnett’s session here and Misty’s here.

Barnett released the sharply clever Tell Me How You Really Feel in May, which followed the October release of her collaborative album with Kurt Vile, Lotta Sea Lice. Barnett explained why she decided to cover Weinberg’s forgotten ‘60s folk track, “Houses,” which was originally recorded with Neil Young on guitar, for Spotify:

I first heard of Elyse Weinberg while on tour with a night off. My friend Janet Weiss (of Sleater Kinney and many other bands) invited me to her house for a home-cooked meal. Late in the evening Janet pulled out a record titled Elyse. The artwork reminded me of Joni Mitchell’s Ladies Of the Canyon. I fell in love with this mysterious artist and in particular her song “Houses”. Rumour has it that Neil Young is playing the lead guitar line. I flipped the record over but couldn’t find his name in the credits. Elyse Weinberg once said of her life in music that “the plan is to remember who i really am”. I liked that.

God’s Favorite Customer bowed in June, and Josh Tillman has since shared lots of rollout-related content, including music videos for the album’s title track and “Date Night.”
