Donald Glover Gives Awkward, Impromptu “This Is America” Performance at BET Awards

The moment Childish Gambino released “This Is America,” it seemed to be all anyone was talking about. The single went platinum within weeks, and the video racked up millions of views—85.3 million, to be exact—within its first week alone. So it’s no surprise that Jamie Foxx, host of Sunday night’s BET Awards, is just as obsessed with the song as the rest of us.

His obsession, though, led to a rather cringe-worthy moment during the awards show, in which he invited the multi-hyphenate Donald Glover onstage and essentially pressured him into an impromptu performance of the track.

After praising the song’s message and calling out a number of celebrities for not giving Glover a standing ovation, Foxx asked Glover to join him onstage, singing the backing vocals and prompting him to perform.

“He doesn’t know what he’s going to do, this is actually uncomfortable for him,” said Foxx as Glover took the stage. “He’s a true artist, he’s uncomfortable and I apologize.” Yikes.

Still, Glover championed the moment gracefully, singing a few lines of the single before using his time onstage to shout out other black television creators: Lena Waithe, creator and showrunner of The Chi, and Issa Rae, creator and star of Insecure.
