Elliott Smith passed away in 2003, but his honest relationship with music left a legacy that will not be forgotten, and the documentary Heaven Adores You explores just that.
Heaven Adores You made its premiere at San Francisco’s International Film Festival on May 5, and now the first few minutes have been shared with the public thanks to AFI DOCS.
Directed by Nickolas Rossi and produced by high school friend Kevin Moyer (also behind the benefit album Live From Nowhere Near You), Heaven Adores You was crowdfunded by Kickstarter in 2011. It’s to include previously unreleased recordings (15-20 of the 35 songs, according to Moyer), video and photos of Smith, as well as conversations with Smith’s sister Ashley, past bandmates and collaborators Jon Brion, Neil Gust, Larry Crane, Rob Schnapf and Slim Moon among others.
