Empress Of Shares “Call Me” from The Turning Soundtrack

L.A. indie-pop singer/producer Lorely Rodriguez, also known as Empress Of, shared a new track in collaboration with The Turning, a horror film starring Mackenzie Davis (Black Mirror, Halt and Catch Fire), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It: Chapter One) and Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project). The film is directed by Floria Sigismondi, who is mostly known for her directorial work on music videos for artists like David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Perfume Genius, Björk and Justin Timberlake. Sigismondi is also notable for directing The Runaways. Given her musical background, it’s only logical that she’d curate an extensive, mood-appropriate soundtrack for The Turning, which is meant to evoke a nostalgic ‘90s feeling.

Co-produced alongside Rodriguez with Lawrence and Yves Rothman, “Call Me” is described in a press release as “a slice of ‘90s pop nostalgia reminiscent of The Cure meets The Cranberries.” The track takes in equal parts the mood and attitude of those acts, with sentimental, fuzzy guitars reminiscent of The Cure’s “Pictures of You.” “When writing the track with Lorely, Yves and I had the idea of writing something that was dreamy and processional; the movie’s swan song. it became a track that Floria Sigismondi used on set a lot to set the mood,” says Rothman. Given the song’s syrupy feel, it’s hard to imagine the song harking Sigismondi’s visions of terror present in The Turning.

The soundtrack for The Turning features a number of artists including Wolfhard’s new band The Aubreys, Courtney Love, Mitski, Vagabon, Kali Uchis, Kim Gordon and Soccer Mommy. The Turning is set for a wide release on Jan. 24. The soundtrack will be released the same day on KRO Records / Sony Music Masterworks.
