Ex Hex Share Anthemic New Song, “Rainbow Shiner”

Ex Hex shared their new single, “Rainbow Shiner,” on Tuesday. The anthemic, riff-packed ballad is the third single from their forthcoming album , due March 22.

It’s been a long-anticipated return for indie-rock trio Ex Hex. The group, fronted by guitar hero and former Wild Flag member Mary Timony, turned heads back in 2014 with the release of their critically acclaimed debut Rips. Now, they’re back with the same can’t-keep-your-feet-still percussion we fell in love with years before, and more ambitious hooks than ever.

Situated somewhere between Sleater-Kinney confidence, Heart glamour and the ethereal graininess of My Bloody Valentine exists the headbanger that is Ex Hex’s latest offering, “Rainbow Shiner.” Granted, such comparisons may come as no surprise when you consider that Timony played for years alongside Sleater-Kinney front-woman Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss. Still, the song reserves its rightful place on garage-rock and power-pop playlists alike, featuring dueling guitar solos and crashing percussion that combine to create what the band’s bassist Betsy Wright describes in a statement as a “victory song about the power and love of music.”
