Watch Father John Misty Cover His ‘Favorite Love Song,’ ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails

Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman, aka music’s esteemed Asshole Laureate, is nothing if not a romantic. During a sold-out show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre last night, the musician treated audience members to a hypnotic rendition of his “favorite love song,” Nine Inch Nails hit “Closer.”

“It’s a little sappy,” Tillman deadpans before launching into the song. The video is well worth watching for the musician’s head-banging and windmilling alone, so skip to the 3:27 mark if that’s all you’re in it for. The cover itself is more than capable, and makes a mountain of sense—judging by its lyrics, the self-loathing-laden, intensely sexual “Closer” could pass for a Father John Misty original.
