Free Cake For Every Creature has shared the music video for “Around You,” off their latest album The Bluest Star, out now through Double Double Whammy.
There’s a familiar, tactile sort of warmth to “Around You” that feels perfectly in line with the music that is put out on Double Double Whammy, the Brooklyn-based label started by Mike Caridi of now-defunct scene icons LVL UP, as well as the label that Free Cake call home.
Katie Bennett, the main songwriter of Free Cake, operates via a forlorn, insular form of songcraft that makes the songs feel totally hermetic. Originally started as a solo project, Free Cake has since expanded to include a rotating cast of bandmates and collaborators. But those isolated origins are reflected in both the “Around You” video, featuring homemade footage of Bennett and bandmates Francis Lyons and Heeyoon Won, as well as the band’s recording procedure for the entirety of The Bluest Star, which found them moving around various rooms in their apartment in West Philly, harnessing the varying acoustics for closeness and distance.
