Daily Dose: Grand Canyon, “Kansas City”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Even if you don’t click the play button on this track from L.A. roots-rock sextet Grand Canyon, the least you could do is doff your hat for the sheer chutzpah they’re exhibiting by naming this band after something as iconic as the frickin’ Grand Canyon. You gotta really bring the goods is you’re gonna try something that ballsy.

Well, we wouldn’t be talking about this band if they didn’t have something special, would we? Though their latest album Le Grand Cañon has been out since last year, it has been plugging all the gaps in our musical vision board since then. The loss of Tom Petty, the layers of gloss and glitter that keeps getting applied to modern country music, the long wait for a new Springsteen album, Fleetwood Mac minus Lindsey Buckingham, the ongoing lull in the world of power pop…Grand Canyon makes all those minor grievances so much easier to bear.

Here is but a taste of what Grand Canyon is all about via a recently released video for “Kansas City,” one of the many highlights from their new LP. It captures just about everything that makes this band such a delight. The tight-knit vocals of co-leaders Casey Shea and Amy Wilcox. The even tighter, soul-informed groove. The joy and sense of humor that they bring to their live performances. The kind of hooks that lesser songwriters would give their i-teeth for.

Grand Canyon is set for a busy springtime with an upcoming hometown show at the Bootleg Theater on April 24th and then a run of dates in Europe starting on May 12th at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.
