Daily Dose: Haybaby, “Get Down”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Brooklyn-based “sludge pop and slop rock” trio Haybaby have a new album on the way, their first release since 2016: They Get There, out on Tiny Engines June 7. The second single from the band’s sophomore effort is “Get Down,” a cathartic indie-rock ode to self-sufficiency that has us excited for Haybaby’s latest to, well, get here.

Haybaby have had a rough road to their new album: After Tiny Engines put out their debut LP Sleepy Kids and subsequent EP Blood Harvest, singer/guitarist Leslie Hong’s father was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, leading her to relocate from New York to Virginia to see him through his ultimately fatal fight. Meanwhile, bassist Sam Yield and drummer Jeremy Duvall dealt with heartaches of their own, and to top it all off, the band’s tour van was burned in a random act of arson—a vehicle engulfed by fingers of flame appears on the band’s They Get There album cover.

All that grief, loss, anger and arson made its way onto the album, which Haybaby were recording concurrently, and “Get Down” finds them refusing to let calamity lay them low. Duvall’s energetic drums counterbalance intertwined, subdued guitars as Hong asserts her independence, facing both her struggles and her strength with honesty: “I get down on, I get down on myself / I don’t need your, I don’t need your help / I’ll take care of, I’ll take care of myself.” It’s an emotional, yet accessible indie tune with the spirit of a punk track—Haybaby have their fists in the air and tears in their eyes at the same time, their spirited perseverance a galvanizing act of humanity.
